Teufelsberg – abandoned spy station

I love abandoned places – something magical and mysterious is in the air around these places. And I’m just turning on my imagination: that I’m a real stalker who first discovered something new and unexplored 🙂

This trip was dedicated to the days of the Cold War. We went to the former US spy station called Teufelsberg which is located quite close to Berlin. Before I started sharing tonnes of images – I would like to recommend reading this article – where you can find a lot of interesting information about the history of Teufelsberg.

Honestly saying, this place can’t be called abandoned, because there are dozens of tourists walking around Teufelsberg and, moreover, a batch of people collecting 10 EUR as an entrance fee (May 2017). You can get a guided tour once per day around 1 PM. But we came here too late, so were just observing surroundings on our own.

To make a long story short: Initially, Teufelsberg was designed as a Nazi military training school in the late 1930th but was never finished because of the War. The building was built so thoroughly and qualitatively, that after several attempts to destroy it – was made a decision to bury it with war-rubble.

In the 1950th The Americans began to use the hill as a listening station – to learn what was going on in the Russian-controlled territory – DDR. Interesting fact – the artificial mountain was located in the British sector of Berlin so Britain and America had to cooperate. Seriously, what cannot be done for the sake of such a noble cause as spying?! 🙂

Field Station Berlin was eventually abandoned in 1992 after the fall of the Berlin Wall and since that time several tenants were trying to do something interesting here. I can’t say that it was successful or useful. Everything looks like it has never been protected.

Inside – an endless world of the street art. Graffiti. Graffiti. Graffiti!!! They are very different, colourful and fascinating.

Floors in the round tower are closed for visiting – all you can do is just go directly to the roof through a dark staircase. Of course, the view from the top is astonishing!

How to get there:

The easiest and convenient way to get there is using S7 or S5 lines to Heerstraße and then use a bike. It will take around 20-30 minutes to reach Teufelsberg by bike from the station.
